[..YouTube..] Hey, that’s pretty good idea…

having the “key events” logged in video description.

  6. tsjoencinema says:

[..YouTube..] Dumb question here… Those sparks flying around.. are they for igniting the rocket?

  7. spacevidcast says:

[..YouTube..] No, they are to burn off excess gasses so the explosion form the main engines is controlled rather than uncontrolled.

  8. [..YouTube..] I am bummed that i missed the live launch.

  9. Tony says:

I can’t get this from my iPhone? Why not?

  10. spiritbearNY says:

[..YouTube..] Meeee tooo, nitrousboy. I watched the night it was scrapped but had plans with friends last night and couldn’t watch. :( Still, glad to see they had a good ride!

  18. elimicnova says:

[..YouTube..] Man, it never gets old. Dont know of anything more beautiful.

Eagleeyez128: The flames are just like the flames you see at a refinery. Its a way to get rid of excess gas, :)

  22. A1dan0Neill says:

[..YouTube..] If you watch carefully, at around 10:08, you can see what appears to be the shockwave when the shuttle breaks the sound barrier.

  24. jjlucash says:

[..YouTube..] It’s a smokestack where the extra hydrogen gas is burned off.

  26. jjlucash says:

[..YouTube..] Nope. :) The steam coming out the sides of the engine bells are hydrogen vapors. These vapors are also combustible, so the sparks fire in order to burn the vapors off so that there won’t be any danger in that area once the engines start.

  30. r1100s says:

    [..YouTube..] Great video.

The GLS operator is my wife!

“The countdown clock will resume on my mark….3…2…1…mark.”

I fell in love with her over 10 years ago when we were in college. We were both pilots, and she had a confident, cool way about her on the radio that I’d never seen before. I was smitten.

She’s still sounds hot on the radio to me. Except now she controls the countdown clock and cutoff.

I could watch this all day.

    /proud hubby

  32. [..YouTube..] Thanks for a great video. Missed the original launch due to being on vacation, so really appreciate this as I never miss launches. I’ve always wondered what the audible pulsing is prior to launch at around T-4:30 and have assumed that this is the APUs. Any ideas? Thanks again

  36. [..YouTube..] your lying?

  37. r1100s says:

[..YouTube..] Watch (and LISTEN) to the videos in my profile.

The GLS operator (Jennifer Hensley) you hear in this video is obviously the same voice you hear encouraging our son.

There are four certified primary operators for GLS: George, Janine, Jennifer, and Alex. Jen and Alex have been the prime operators and alternated launches since 2001.

I have no reason to lie. I have every reason to be proud of my wife.

  40. i understand i was amazed that

  41. razcasket says:

[..YouTube..] This was my first, and most probably my last, shuttle launch! It was amazing! It lit up the sky in what I can only describe as something akin to an atom bomb detonating! This particular video doesn’t show the extent of how bright it looked from the causeway, but I have a video I took with my phone that I will upload soon that shows just how bright this was. Amazing!

[..YouTube..] More likely the venting from the engines (prior to ignition) is gaseous helium .

  45. [..YouTube..] To r1100s – ignore that idiot nyyankeffan2009 – your wife is quite amazing.

I’m from London and saw the launch from Kennedy and your wife and the thousands of great people who made this miracle work are people to be proud of.

There will always be those who are jealous – ignore then and give your wife a big hug !

  47. [..YouTube..] Thanks NASA employees for your services to our country. The media bashes you guys way too much. For an annual budget of only $20 billion or so, the American taxpayer gets a big bang for it’s buck. Too bad so many people (lazy when in school because learning is “too hard”) are ignorant about science.

  49. Autocad says:

One of the best quaility videos!

    And THANKs to NASA!!!!

  50. only if it was 20 billion,we could be on mars by now, its actually a lot less.

  51. YoruSedative says:

08:53 – 08:56 what is that whistling sound? it can be heard at every launch

  52. Chris14477 says:

@YoruSedative It is the sound-suppression system being activated. It helps prevent the acoustic feedback from being too much on the shuttle.

  53. gobears1987 says:

yeah without that system, the SSME’s would possibly damage the shuttle.

  54. Faztlan says:

TEXAS is now in control…. Roger..

  55. penfat1 says:

that sound is the sound surpresion water system
