President Obama will be giving his State of the Union Address later tonight. The space rumor mill is running at full speed with possible increases in NASA’s budget to not granting the extra billion dollars we thought NASA was going to get. Stay with the program of record or dump that in favor of a Jupiter 241 Stretched Heavy. We won’t know until tonight, but here are a few of the rumors we have been hearing.

Governments and religions always mess up science and astronomy :-(

  2. ralpher05 says:

Hope he does spell out a good direction….to include commercial space….*fingers crossed*

  3. ralpher05 says:

@CiphersSon Yeah, usually the politics in government dis’s progress. Commercial dares to take bigger risks, which were taken with the the manned space program up to and including Apollo. Today NASA seems to be hesitant about risk.

  4. CiphersSon says:

@ralpher05 you know.. i would volunteer to get on shuttle and fly the same route as Voyager 2 is flying never to come back…or better yet build a huge round space craft to create some semblance of gravity with a ion thruster and fly in to deep space. I’m sure there would be many other volunteers. And i would do it in the name of science exploration :-)

  5. whats the point of developing something that flew (ares 1x) then scrubbing it? or are there major flaws with the ares that they are not telling us about?

why not create a spaceship that is like one of those biglow blowup designs and stick some ion drives on it, and just pilot it around the earth and moon to see if everything works, then you have a reliable spaceship to fly around the solar system in. shame you cant fly the ISS around the solar system

WOW — I really like your site and its focus. I will be back often. I have not seen the state of the union address but will likely find it and watch after this post. my guess is though is that Obama will not address much about NASA as most folks are very worried that he is not engaged with the right things and is pushing the health care agenda in a way they do not like. I am pretty sure a gaggle of advisors are going to be telling him to give the folks some meat an potatoes info on how he is engaged on jobs and how he has heard the public out cry from the election and he is going to work on the economy. As for myself I would love to see him address the future of NASA and give it direct goals. It continues to astound me that after the US claims the high ground in such areas as space we then let our space agency languish with obsolete or unfunded mandated. I wish it was a requirement that if the congress or the president messed with Nasa funding or goals, that it was required to explain how this will affect the causal chain of events inside the organization. As it stands our space program continues to be not well guided and the public not well educated on what NASA is doing and why it is important. I am glad sites like yours are out there and becoming increasingly easier to find. Now I will go find the state of the union address and watch Obama spend 20 minutes talking about space so I can feel as foolish as a pet rock. :-)

  7. PonderLust says:

I don’t think they’ll have any options other than commercial unless congress wants to pay more.

    They need Werner again.
