@chaos6575
1) Better than no abortion system like at the shuttles and I don't think it was that useless.
2) I don't think that those modifications would have been cheaper than developing a 5 segment SRB and you would have needed Orion etc for both designs. The operation costs of the Ares 1 would have also been lower because you can recover the SRB.
3) It is expensive for Moon or Mars missions, thats right. But if you want to go to the ISS a heavy lifter would have way to high operation costs.

The Ares I was always a bad idea.

1) You can't shut off solid boosters. If the crew had to abort , the capsule could have flown through the engine exhaust and doomed the crew.
2) The Delta IV and Altas V were in the same category as the Ares I. With some modification, they could have done the same thing.
3) Having two launch vehicles owned by NASA is expensive.

Why does everyone think that Ares 1 was a bad idea? Especially with the ISS in the sky until 2020 it would have been very good to have a launcher that has low operation costs and is human-rated for the crew-rotatio-missions. Or does NASA want to depend on the Russians for 10 more years?
btw: Chris answered the orbiter question absolutely right ;)
